Joshua 9
9:1And as they all heard (the kings of the Amorites on the other side of the Jordan, the ones in the mountainous area, and the ones on the plain, and the ones in all the coast of the great sea, and the ones towards Antilebanon, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Gergashites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites)
9:2that they came together to the same place to wage war against Joshua and Israel all together.
9:3And the ones dwelling in Gibeon heard all as much as Joshua did to Jericho and to Ai.
9:4And they acted, even indeed themselves with astuteness. And coming, they stood by and prepared. And taking old sackcloths upon their donkeys, and old leather bags of wine being broken down and all tied up,
9:5and the hollows in their shoes, and their sandals old and mended on their feet, and their garments being old upon them, and the bread loaves of their provisions were dry and moldy and worm eaten,
9:6that they came to Joshua into the camp of Israel in Gilgal. And they said to Joshua, and to all Israel, From out of a land far off we have come, and now ordain with us a covenant!
9:7And the sons of Israel said to the Hivites, Look, you do not dwell together with me, so how do we ordain with you a covenant?
9:8And they said to Joshua, We are your servants. And Joshua said to them, From what place are you, and from what place do you come?
9:9And they said to him, your servants have come from out of a land far off exceedingly in the name of the lord your God. For we have heard his name, and all as much as he did in Egypt;
9:10and all as much as he did to the two kings of the Amorites, to the ones who were on the other side of the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth and in Edrain.
9:11And our elders spoke to us, and all the ones dwelling in our land, saying, Take for yourselves provisions for the journey, and go to meet with them! And you shall say to them, We are your servants, and now ordain with us the covenant!
9:12These are our bread loaves we took hot, being provided of them from our houses in the day in which we came forth to come to you. And now behold, they are dry, and have become worm eaten.
9:13And these are the leather bags for the wine which we filled new, And these are torn. And these are our garments made old from the exceedingly long journey.
9:14And the rulers took their provisions, and the mouth of the lord they did not ask.
9:15And Joshua made peace with them, and ordained with them a covenant, and the rulers of the congregation swore by an oath to them.
9:16And it came to pass after three days, after the ordaining with them a covenant, they heard that they are near them, and that they dwelt among them.
9:17And the sons of Israel departed, and came forth into their cities the third day. And their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and cities of Jearim.
9:18And the sons of Israel did not wage war with them, for all the rulers of the congregation swore by an oath to them by the lord God of Israel. And all the congregation complained about the rulers.
9:19And all the rulers said to all the congregation, We swore by an oath to them by the lord God of Israel. And now, we shall not be able to touch them.
9:20This we will do to them -- to take them alive, and we will preserve them, and there will not be anger against us on account of the oath which we swore by an oath to them.
9:21And the rulers said to them, They shall live, and they shall be woodcutters and water-carriers to all the congregation, just as the rulers said to them.
9:22And Joshua called them together, and he spoke to them, saying, Why did you mislead me, saying, We are exceedingly far from you; but you are natives of the ones dwelling among us?
9:23And now you are accursed, in no way shall there fail from one of you being a servant, nor woodcutter, nor a water-carrier to me, and to my God.
9:24And they answered Joshua, saying that, A message was announced to us as much as the lord your God ordered Moses his servant to give to you this land, and to utterly destroy us, and all the ones dwelling upon it, from in front of you. And we feared exceedingly for our lives from your presence, and we did this thing.
9:25And now, behold, we are under your hands as it pleases you. And as it seems good to do to us, you do it!
9:26And they did to them thus, and Joshua rescued them in that day from the hands of the sons of Israel, and they did not do away with them.
9:27And Joshua established them in that day as woodcutters and water-carriers to all the congregation, and for the altar of God until the day today, and for the place which ever the lord should choose.
